AFAIK ICANN have placed a restriction on .tel which prevents Telnic opening up their name servers to be used in the same way as all other TLDs.

BUT is there any restriction being placed on these new gTLDs to stop them storing data in the DNS (as .tel does) and then producing a SIMPLE API to allow software developers to access this data and format it as they see fit ?

If you Buy or Sell Domains you may want to visit Sedo's New gTLD Info Page

For that reason .tel is different than the others, if they open the DNS then will be 1931 reason to be the same like the others, we should see .tel as a big point in our favor.

Yes! the restriction is called patents, telnic owns all patents relating to how .tel is used via DNS so no other gTLD can ever make a service that uses the DNS to store data as it would come up during the application process that they don't own the legal rights and it over laps with what all ready exists, thus all that would be allowed if anything is "with hosting" is a standard API cloud served service aka many thousands of servers doing the work pulling data from database after database which drives up costs and makes the likely hood of someone willing to implement such a service to compete this way via a direct TLD unlikely and unprofitable.

If its about patent then it last only 20 years, from then anyone can use it without any restrictions

One observation needs to be made, even if Telnic own watertight patents:

USERS DON'T CARE WHETHER DATA IS STORED IN THE DNS OR ELSEWHERE !

What matters to users is that they get the service they want, at a price they are prepared to pay - that's it !

So unless storing data in the DNS leads to the provision of new services, which are impossible or inefficient without this facility (such as Dial By Name etc), it's all pretty irrelevant to user appeal (ie. domain registrations) where the data is stored.

But to get new services developed using the DNS you need an ecosystem encouraging the growth of .tel registrations to generate the necessary critical mass to make it attractive to develop such services.
