How long can we still keep our .tels before Telnic will terminate the service entirely?

Post by HeavenAndHell on Wed 15 May 2013, 9:29 pm

What surprises me is that some forum members still seem to think there will be further development and marketing of the original Telnic subdomain .tels, despite all the evidence supplied by Telnic/Telnames to the contrary ie:

- Telnic have cancelled their .tel Roadmap
- Telnic have cancelled their .Telegraph Newsletter
- Telnic have put their Forum into "lockdown" mode
- Telnic have put a stop to any real development of subdomain .tels
- The new iPhone & Android apps are only for Telnames .tels
- The Affiliate Program is only for Telnames .tels
- The TV ads, Business shows, Radio interviews, etc are only for Telnames .tels

IT'S PRETTY OBVIOUS - Telnic subdomain .tels have no marketable future !
When the message gets through I expect many existing Telnic subdomain .tel registrants will also quit the .tel project.

BUT I just have this feeling that Telnic/Telnames may be OK with this - it's obvious they have decided the future lies with Telnames single-page .tels - the only problem is how to get rid of the thousands of existing Telnic subdomain .tels ?

I could be wrong about this of course, and Telnic may suddenly re-introduce the .tel Roadmap, restart the .Telegraph Newsletter, remove "lockdown" from their Forum and start to develop the Telnic subdomain .tel format again.

But all the evidence supplied by them so far would suggest I am right !

How easy is it for Telnic to cancel the contract with ICANN?

That would achieve nothing, since Telnic is the Registry (as well as being a Reseller - effectively a Registrar in all but name - via its wholly-owned subsidiary Telnames).

Lose the .Tel Registry and you lose the whole domain extension - although ICANN will have in place an insurance policy to cover the cost of continuing to run an extension for a while if a Registry is unable to meet its obligations.

2016 is the critical date - by then Telnic Ltd. and Telnames Ltd. should have exhausted the $35,000,000 shareholder funding, assuming the ongoing annual combined losses continue at much the current rate.

Of course they could get bought out before then - or have millions of users generating the essential "critical mass" - if Telnic/Telnames decide to follow the path chosen by Facebook, Twitter, etc and let users have a BASIC .TEL FREE OF CHARGE.

But what do multi-billion dollar corporations like Facebook and Twitter know that Telnic/Telnames doesn't ?

All these success stories like Apple, Google, Facebook and Twitter have one thing in common: They give the first priority to the needs and wishes of their customers. Revenues will come in the second step.
That is a thing Telnic/Telnames has to learn. Before such an elementary change nothing can happen!

@Tim - couldn't agree more - I just don't think Telnic/Telnames will change - so all that can be done is wait for the money to run out and (hopefully) a fresh outlook to come with the new owners of .tel !

This assumes of course two things:

1. The shareholders who have stumped up $35,000,000 don't put any more money in.

2. Someone actually wants to buy the .tel project - there will potentially be competing opportunities with the new gTLDs.
