If you believe .tel has a credible future...

I picked one up yesterday - Slots.tel - I've got to work out when I have the time how to best turn it into a revenue-earner and whether I should transfer it to Telnames.

But at less than $10 it seemed too good to turn down, particularly as the .com equivalent sold for a cool $5,500,000 in June 2010 - see http://www.domaining.com/topsales

Of course .tel has a credible future! If the operator wouldn't abandon Telnic, people will start noticing .tel. But unfortunately the focus is on single-page-websites now. Nobody knows what the advantage of them is. Hence we have to wait a few years longer until the work at Telnic will be resumed.

Well, there will be nothing out of .TEL in future, as .TEL is dying. Certain client base, I guess those having really no other better solution to publish their contacts online, they will remain for years clients. But as a matter of fact, so many free websites are out there available, offering way more than a plain stupid .TEL domain. Even grandmothers have websites. And almost everyone has Facebook. Why do you need your contact information on .TEL domain, when you have all friends on Facebook, knowing your contact information.

No future guys! Just remember, it was a big bad illusion.

I disagree. Using the DNS has great potential, but it requires development. One day somebody will correct the management mistakes from the current operator. Of course it won't happen fast, because a change of mind at Telnic must happen first. Hence a lot of patience is needed of all participants.

Of course; you can read it easily in my previous comments. Seriously the idea behind Telnic and Telnames is a great one. Unfortunately only the output speed from Telnic is too slow. Telnic isn't very flexible. To me it seems most people think this way. Most people believe in the concept, but not in the current execution.

The idea is not great anymore! It was. Now it is delusion.

Great ideas require proper time point for execution. This idea has failed and is continuing to fail.

Probably you will say it's only a false marketing promise by Telnic, but what about dialing with letters? No other service succeeded in this field until today either. What about a global directory? This still doesn't exist. What about a cheap and easy mobile website? The potential is still there. Only the right measures are required. The biggest problem for .tel that I see is that if Telnic doesn't get active, somebody else will.

Dialing with letters works since there are mobile phones, you put letters into the cell phone, you choose the name of your friend and dial.

Don't you get? Companies worldwide are already active and succeeded stronger and better then TELNIC. Just look at http://about.me which already have way more clients than TELNIC, while http://about.me started later than TELNIC.

There are numerous other companies, you register domain and you get free website, also manageable easy from the control panel. 

Nobody is going to come and "save" TELNIC from disaster. It is smart idea, with stupid implementation and delay in time. We have here web 2.0, and TELNIC is way behind in time.

Almost all features are free of charge on about.me. While TELNIC, instead of making more features, they dropped features and started charging some shameful amount for single page website on TELNAMES. What the heck??? Somebody is bullshitting the clients.

How can you dial a company (or a friend) with letters on your phone if the number isn't in your personal phone book? How many paying customers about.me has? I guess less than Telnic. The site of Jon Callaghan looks nice, but even simpler than a Telname. Wouldn't it be good to have a personalized domain name included (not only an URL addition)?

I agree with JLouis:
A service can't survive only with the promise it will realize something great in the future.
It has to start with a product well thought out from the start.
A great idea is worth nothing without a good implementation.
Telnic has no appealing product and can't compete against itself (Telnames).
