The one and only criterion for good .tels seems to be the background picture. Nothing else matters.

The most stunning fact about Telnames is that every domain is filled with content while most domains from Telnic are empty!

No surprise about that. People who are willing to pay two and half more than the usual registration fee from Telnic certainly have the intention to develop their domain.

Nothing else except the purpose of .tel :

"The domain's purpose is to provide a single name space for Internet communications services. 2nd level registrations serve as a single point of contact for individuals and businesses, providing a listing of contact information directly in the Domain Name System, without the need to build, host or manage a traditional web service."

1. Any intelligent person can see that if the whole point of .tel is to "give someone money to put your name, address, telephone number, etc. online" that you might want want a little something more for your money, because anyone can get what .tel is offering as a paid service for free anywhere, anytime.

2. Any intelligent person can also see that a nice background picture, gallery, and video are the most intelligent and accepted additions to any "contact information based" profile.

Question: What is .tel ? Answer: Give someone money so you can put your basic profile and contact information as text online.

Question: I can get this for free anywhere, is there a popular .tel directory where it will be easily found, like a real a reason that I would spend money to do this ? Answer: Er, uh, well, uh.

Question: Can I least get something good to go with my basic contact information, like a background picture, a video, a gallery ? Answer: Uh, ok, you can now.

Duh.

Nothing else matters ? There is basic profile/contact information and a little more incentive to give someone money to put it online.

Now about that directory question - How about a real answer and the real incentive before the above is not enough and they all drop those too !?!

Telnic/Telnames/All must understand:

1. I can go to Yelp, or Yellow Pages, or Facebook, etc. ... and get a free listing to get my profile and contact information online today.

2. I can have that information readily discoverable in a free, popular online directory where it can actually get found and used.

3. I can get a free, short url that acts as a direct link to that profile and information that I can use outside that directory.

So, what am I really paying for ?

A. .tel should be better than my free listing by design. ( Telnames template is )

B. TelPages should be better than my free listing directory. ( Hmmm, not even close )

C. My url should be more memorable as a direct link to that information outside the directory ( Almost all .tel's have this ability, but linking to a Telnames template is best )

Simple reality:

If a customer can't get a complete scenario above that's better than any free service on ALL points, the masses will never support .tel ... it's a "charity buy", once.

"Ownership" is not going to get it done, no one owns anything anyway, they rent it, and so although there may be good reasons to rent your own, .tel and TelPages still has to beat all 3 "free" points above !

I meant the background picture matters for the assessment of the homepage design, because the picture determines the design to 90 percent. The homepage owner has no other options to adjust the design according to his own ideas, because everything is static as designed by Telnames. The homepage owner can't even place text on top of the homepage.

Ah, I see what you mean in that sense.

Still, it's much better than and/or equal to Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, etc.

At least you have the ability to add and/or change the Picture, Gallery, Video, etc. at any time with Telnames.

Simple data published online, like the above competitor examples, is all that .tel was designed for, at least they beat the competition on "listing style" on those points.

If they could get anywhere close to competitive on the Directory side, they win overall, and that's more important than a million minor "website" style changes.

Nobody complains because they can't change the design of their Yelp, Yellow Pages, or Facebook pages either, and if they do, no one cares, and it doesn't stop success.

Pics, Video, i.e. "quality profile additions" are competitive changes. Anything else, not so much, i.e. font, icons, etc.

Looks like the conference is going well according to the blog, hopefully Telnames will be able to pick up some insight and beat the "free" options soon.

That is exactly what Telnames is offering - and therewith shows the current weakness of Telnames.
So what else can he post?
Hopefully Telnic or Telnames or somebody else will do remedial action to .tel in the future!

I am sorry, I just thought that you and the user at Name Pros forum are the same person: http://www.namepros.com/4418136-post7107.html

Surely, it was a mistake.

The ten examples mentioned on top of this forum are stunning. If I would have never heard about tel before and see domains like www.barack.tel www.ladygagatribute.tel www.neondrum.tel and www.beachzahrada.tel I would be persuaded to buy a tel immediately.
